National 3

Though National 3 Qualifications may be used with older pupils, the content is very much at the Introduction to Chemistry level and could be used with pupils S1-S3 (11 - 14yrs).

- KS3 || - K9

National 4

National 4 is the beginning of more specialised Chemistry teaching. Internally assessed mainly. Pupils S3/4 (14/15yrs).

National 5

Is a specialised Chemistry course designed to take pupils onto Higher level. Externally assessed. Pupils S3/4 (14/15/16yrs).

- KS4 || - K10

Higher

This is the specialised Chemistry course which provides the entrance requirement for many Further Education courses. S5 (16/17 years).

Advanced Higher

This overlaps with early stages of Degree courses. Though not essential, this course is aimed at those seriously considering studying Chemistry or related subjects at University. S6 (17/18 years).

Mixed Bag

I'll use this for resources that are not specifically aimed at any particular course and may well be simply for fun.

Revised Higher Chemistry

We've decided to go with the Revised Higher this year in anticipation of there being 'minimal' changes needed for the CFE Higher next year. Notes will be revamped versions of my own Higher Notes, designed initially to mesh with a Higher course produced by mainly James Gillespies (Edinburgh). This in turn was based on 'Challenge Chemistry' as produced by R.I.S.E.

Schools, such as ourselves, who purchased 'Challenge Chemistry' probably have the right to use amended versions of their worksheets. However, I cannot presume to have any right to share or distribute these, so will only be posting my own stuff.

Rather than start amending things, I'm mothballing this page and starting a new CfE Higher page.

One of our Revising Higher pupils has pointed out that there were some mixed up and missing papers round about 2003, 2004 & 2005. This has been sorted.

Third part of Unit 3. With weak Acids etc shifted to AdvH, this just leaves 10.1 & 10.7 from the original CHallenge Chemistry Equilibrium Topic.

Second part of Unit 3. More or less the Enthalpy & Moles Notes we've used previously - with Hess's Law and Bond Enthalpies added.

Moving onto Unit 3. Some of the other Topics will require a bit of redrafting but decided to go with Reactions Rates exactly as before.

Revised Higher Chemistry Update 3

Kids are too keen and working too fast so we are thinking of keeping most of this the same as previous years with a new section on Food Chemistry to draw it all together at the end. Easier than trying to integrate new with old. Maybe next year.

Unit 2 Part 2 Notes

Also decided to make LTS files easier/quicker to access.

Revised Higher Chemistry Update 2

Posted Mon, 09 Sept 2013 21:30:00 GMT by Gordon Watson/Peter Macklin.

Just started Unit 2. Lot of new stuff that Peter is still rationalising/writing so decided to split Unit into 2 parts (at least) since first part was largely similar to previous course and relatively 'easy' to throw together.

This a 'retrospective' post as we started the Higher last June. Unit 1 was relatively straightforward thanks to the hard work of colleagues at James Gillespies (Edinburgh) - one since moved on to St Thomas of Aquin's (Edinburgh) - who had reorganised many of the 'Challenge Chemistry' resources that we've been using for many years.
